A VALORANT map veto is the pre-match process teams use to remove maps, choose maps and sometimes determine starting sides. It turns the full competitive map pool into the smaller set that will actually be played.
The exact order depends on the tournament format and whether the match is best-of-three or best-of-five, so viewers should check the event's rulebook. The strategic logic, however, is consistent.
What is a map ban?
A ban removes a map from the series. Teams usually use early bans to eliminate a weak map or deny an opponent's strongest map.
That decision is not always obvious. A team may leave a statistically difficult map available because it has prepared a new composition, expects the opponent to avoid it or wants to protect another matchup.
What is a map pick?
A pick is a map selected to be played. Teams often choose a map where their structure, agent pool and recent results create an advantage.
Picking a map does not always mean choosing the starting side. Tournament rules may give side selection to the opposing team on a picked map, creating a balance between map preference and defensive or attacking comfort.
What is the decider?
In a best-of-three, continued bans and picks normally leave one final map. That map becomes the decider if the teams split the first two games.
A best-of-five uses more of the pool and tests depth. Teams cannot hide weak maps as easily, which is one reason lower-bracket and grand finals can look different from earlier rounds.
Why the veto matters to viewers
The veto can explain a surprising result before the first pistol round. Look for:
- a team forced onto its lowest-played map;
- a comfort pick countered by a specialist composition;
- a decider that strongly favors one side statistically;
- recent roster changes that shrink a team's practiced map pool.
Is the veto format identical at every event?
No. Series length, map-pool size, seed advantage and tournament rules can change the sequence. Official broadcast graphics and event rulebooks are the best sources for a particular match.
