
The United Nations General Assembly has endorsed a shift towards world maps that represent Africa and other regions more fairly, bringing a long-running debate about geography, education and political perception into global policy.
The resolution promotes the Equal Earth projection over the familiar Mercator-style map for general-purpose representation. It was sponsored by Togo on behalf of the African Group and supported by the African Union's “Correct The Map” campaign.
The vote was 164 in favour, one against and six abstentions, according to UN meeting coverage and the African Union.
Why does Africa look larger on the new map?
Africa has not changed size. The projection has.
Earth is roughly spherical, while a printed or on-screen map is flat. Turning a curved surface into a rectangle always introduces distortion. A cartographer must decide which properties to protect: direction, shape, distance, area or some compromise among them.
The Mercator projection was developed in the 16th century for navigation. It preserves local angles, which helps sailors plot constant compass bearings. But it greatly enlarges land near the poles.
That is why Greenland can appear close to Africa's size on a Mercator map even though Africa is about 14 times larger by area.
Equal Earth is an equal-area projection. It aims to show the relative area of continents and countries more accurately, although their shapes cannot remain perfectly undistorted everywhere.
What did the UN resolution say?
The text calls for a fairer and more accurate cartographic representation of the world's regions, particularly Africa. It encourages governments, international organisations, education systems and other institutions to reconsider maps that distort relative area.
The resolution is a political endorsement, not a command that instantly changes every atlas, classroom wall or digital map.
Different maps will also continue to serve different tasks. Marine navigation, local street directions, weather modelling and global education do not necessarily need the same projection.
Why is a map politically important?
Maps are not neutral windows. Their centre, scale, borders, labels and projection shape how viewers understand the world.
When Europe, Greenland, Russia and North America appear disproportionately large, viewers may unconsciously associate size with importance. Campaigners argue that repeatedly shrinking equatorial regions contributes to an outdated picture of global power.
The African Union said the Mercator projection significantly understates Africa's scale. Its support for Equal Earth is therefore about representation as well as mathematical accuracy.
Critics of the resolution argue that no projection is perfect and that the UN should prioritise more urgent problems. Supporters respond that educational standards and public perception are legitimate international concerns—and that changing a general-purpose map does not prevent institutions from addressing crises.
Is Equal Earth perfectly accurate?
No flat world map is perfectly accurate in every way.
Equal Earth preserves relative area, making it useful when comparing the size of continents, countries, forests, populations or climate effects. It distorts some shapes and distances, particularly across a full world view.
Mercator protects angles but distorts area. The Winkel Tripel projection balances several kinds of distortion and has been used by major map publishers. Globe views avoid many flat-map problems but are harder to print and cannot show the entire planet at once.
The right question is not “Which map is true?” It is “Which projection is appropriate for this purpose?”
For a classroom poster intended to compare continents, equal-area is a strong choice. For plotting a historic rhumb-line sailing route, Mercator still explains the navigational logic for which it was designed.
What changes for schools and digital platforms?
The UN vote could influence procurement and design decisions. Education ministries may update textbooks, international organisations may change report templates, and media outlets may adopt Equal Earth for global data graphics.
Digital mapping is more complicated. Many online maps use Web Mercator because it supports smooth zooming and square map tiles. At neighbourhood scale, the global area distortion is less visible. When users zoom out, some services switch to a globe view.
The resolution does not require every street-map engine to be rebuilt. Its clearest effect is likely to be on static world maps used for education, diplomacy and communication.
Why the 164-1 vote is notable
The broad majority demonstrates that the issue united countries across regions. The United States cast the only vote against the resolution, while Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine abstained, according to UN reporting.
A large vote does not make the measure legally binding. It does give the campaign political legitimacy and can shape voluntary standards.
France had already announced that it would move away from Mercator in its official representation of the world, illustrating how national institutions may act before or after the UN endorsement.
The bottom line
The UN has not made Africa bigger, redrawn national borders or selected one map for every purpose. It has backed a general-purpose projection that represents relative area more fairly than Mercator.
The result may look unfamiliar because centuries of repetition made a highly distorted map feel normal. That discomfort is exactly why the debate matters: a map does more than show the world. It teaches people how to imagine it.
