
“Sustainable fuel,” “e-fuel” and “biofuel” are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not.
Biofuel
Biofuel is produced from biological material. Advanced versions aim to use waste or non-food feedstocks rather than crops that compete with food or encourage land conversion. Its impact depends heavily on farming, processing and transport.
E-fuel
E-fuel is synthetic fuel made using electricity, typically by combining hydrogen with captured carbon. Climate performance depends on low-carbon electricity and a credible source of carbon. An energy-intensive process powered by fossil electricity loses much of its benefit.
Sustainable fuel
Sustainable fuel is a broader standards-based description. It may include qualifying bio-derived or synthetic components that meet lifecycle, sourcing and traceability rules. The label must be read with the certification behind it.
Tailpipe versus lifecycle emissions
Hydrocarbon fuel still releases carbon dioxide when burned. The claimed advantage is that its carbon was recently captured or recovered rather than extracted as new fossil carbon. Production emissions, transport and land use still count.
Why drop-in compatibility matters
A drop-in fuel is designed to work in existing combustion equipment with limited modification. That can help sectors with long-lived vehicles, but supply, price and renewable-energy demand remain constraints.
