
Formula 1's 2026 regulations require racing fuel built from advanced sustainable components. The phrase “100% sustainable fuel” is easy to misread, because a running combustion engine still produces carbon dioxide at the exhaust.
The important change is the fuel's carbon source and lifecycle. The FIA framework is designed to avoid newly extracted fossil carbon and to verify where the components came from.
What can the fuel be made from?
The FIA says eligible components can come from non-food biomass, municipal waste or renewable feedstocks of non-biological origin. Synthetic routes can also use captured carbon combined with hydrogen produced using low-carbon electricity.
This is different from simply blending a small percentage of biofuel into conventional petrol. The final racing fuel must meet detailed chemical, performance and sustainability requirements.
Why “100%” does not mean zero tailpipe emissions
Carbon-containing fuel releases carbon dioxide when burned. Sustainable-fuel claims focus on the carbon cycle: the carbon was recently captured or recovered rather than extracted as new fossil carbon from underground.
Lifecycle results still depend on energy used in production, processing and transport. That is why source certification and greenhouse-gas accounting matter. A fuel with the correct chemistry but a high-carbon production process would not deliver the same benefit.
How the FIA checks compliance
Before a fuel can be used in a Formula 1 event, suppliers submit samples for analysis and approval. Components undergo a traceability and sustainability-compliance process managed through an independent scheme appointed by the FIA.
Samples can also be taken at races and compared with the approved reference using laboratory analysis. The rules permit a tightly limited package of functional additives and denaturants, but do not allow unrelated non-sustainable material to be hidden inside the blend.
What “drop-in” fuel means
The FIA describes the fuel as drop-in because it is intended to behave like petrol and remain relevant to internal-combustion engines beyond racing. That does not mean a consumer can buy F1 race fuel at an ordinary station today.
Commercial scale, price, renewable-electricity supply and sustainable feedstock availability remain major constraints. Formula 1 is functioning as a demanding development environment rather than proof that global road transport can switch instantly.
The fuel is only one part of the 2026 power unit
The new power-unit formula also gives electrical power a much larger role. The FIA's original framework targeted a more even split between the combustion and electrical elements, while removing the MGU-H and increasing energy recovery.
Fuel, hybrid efficiency and lighter vehicle rules therefore work together. Evaluating the sustainability claim by looking only at the liquid in the tank misses the larger engineering package.
What the rule can and cannot prove
The rule can push suppliers toward verified non-fossil carbon sources and accelerate development of compatible fuel. It cannot make racing impact-free. Freight, aviation, circuit operations and the embodied emissions of equipment remain part of Formula 1's total footprint.
