Heavy South Delhi traffic beside construction barricades with a map marking major choke points

Why South Delhi traffic is unusually difficult

Several infrastructure and repair projects are running at the same time across South Delhi, reducing road space on routes that already carry traffic from Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram. Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and Josip Broz Tito Marg are among the most affected corridors.

The problem is not one closure. Construction barricades, bridge work, resurfacing and Metro activity are creating a chain of bottlenecks. When drivers leave one blocked corridor, adjoining roads receive more traffic and can slow down even without construction of their own.

Commuters should check the latest Delhi Traffic Police advisory before departure because lanes and diversions can change as work advances.

Ring Road near Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram

Work to extend the Barapullah Elevated Road has occupied part of the carriageway opposite the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT on the side leading toward Ashram and Lajpat Nagar. Jersey barriers narrow the usable road near a point where traffic from multiple directions already merges.

The area also handles vehicles approaching from the Sarai Kale Khan flyover and routes serving eastern and northern Delhi. A bridge connection linked to the regional rapid-transit stabling yard adds construction activity on the Jangpura side.

On the opposite carriageway, renovation by the Delhi Jal Board and subsequent resurfacing have affected movement from Ashram toward Kilokari. The same stretch serves drivers heading between Lajpat Nagar, Barapullah, Sarai Kale Khan and Noida.

Outer Ring Road and Modi Mill

Major PWD work connected with a corridor between the Modi Mill and Bhairav Temple flyovers is influencing Outer Ring Road and nearby alternatives. The route is a key east-west movement line, so a reduction in capacity quickly appears at adjoining junctions.

Drivers should expect delays around Nehru Place, Kalkaji and the approaches linking to Mathura Road. A short distance on the map can take much longer in peak periods because traffic has to merge repeatedly around work zones.

Chirag Delhi, Siri Fort and MB Road

DMRC infrastructure work between the Chirag Delhi flyover and Siri Fort intersection has placed barricades on Josip Broz Tito Marg. The road connects Defence Colony and Lajpat Nagar with CR Park, Malviya Nagar, Saket and Ambedkar Nagar.

Metro work on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road is expected to affect traffic through mid-September. This corridor is already sensitive to congestion around Khanpur, Saket and the Chirag Delhi side, so even off-peak journeys may take longer.

More flyover repairs are coming

Repair work has been planned for Nehru Nagar, AIIMS and Barapullah Phase-I flyovers. If major phases overlap, traffic may shift toward Aurobindo Marg, Mathura Road and internal colony roads.

Using residential lanes as shortcuts can create local gridlock and safety problems. Navigation apps may suggest a route based on recent speed, but an official diversion can be more reliable when a closure has just begun.

Practical travel checklist

  1. Check Delhi Traffic Police updates immediately before leaving.
  2. Add at least 30 minutes for cross-city peak-hour travel.
  3. Prefer Metro for journeys where the station connection is practical.
  4. Avoid changing lanes near barricade tapers and merging points.
  5. Keep emergency vehicles and bus lanes clear.
  6. Confirm school-bus or office-cab pickup changes in advance.

For airport or railway journeys, build a larger buffer. A route that looks clear early in the trip may still feed into a work zone later.

When will conditions improve?

Some resurfacing was expected to finish by the end of August, but larger elevated-road, Metro and bridge projects have longer schedules. Traffic may improve on one carriageway while another phase begins nearby.
