Apple's first foldable iPhone is not part of the September 18 iPhone 18 Pro release. The iPhone Duo preorder opens at 5:00 a.m. PT on October 16 in the United States, with availability beginning October 23. Its starting price is $1,999 for 256GB.
That later timetable gives buyers more time to decide whether they genuinely need a folding iPhone or simply want the newest Apple device. The Duo combines a 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch folding screen, but it also brings first-generation durability, repair and app-compatibility questions.

The two launch colours are Night Sky and Star White. Storage is the most important irreversible choice. Cloud storage can hold photos and files, but it does not replace space needed by apps, offline video, games and local 4K recording.
Most buyers should begin with 256GB or 512GB. The 1TB and 2TB versions are aimed at people who regularly capture large video projects or keep extensive media offline. Paying $1,200 more for the 2TB model only makes sense when there is a measurable storage requirement.
How to prepare for the October 16 preorder
Sign in to the correct Apple Account, save delivery and payment details, and decide the capacity before preorder time. Confirm whether the phone will be bought outright, through Apple Upgrade or with a carrier instalment plan. A carrier offer can look cheaper while spreading credits across many bills.
Apple's US store allows buyers to connect with AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon, or activate with a carrier later. Phones bought directly from Apple are normally unlocked, but Apple states that devices financed through certain carrier instalment programmes remain locked until paid in full.
At checkout, verify the exact colour, storage, delivery address and estimated date. The iPhone 18 Pro and Duo have different preorder pages and release schedules, so do not assume an iPhone 18 Pro configuration has reserved a Duo.
eSIM is mandatory
Apple says the iPhone Duo activates with eSIM and does not support a physical SIM. Buyers should confirm eSIM support with the intended carrier before ordering. This is particularly important for prepaid customers, people using smaller carriers and anyone planning to export the phone.
An unlocked Duo can use travel eSIMs, but network-band compatibility and international roaming still depend on the carrier and destination. Importing also creates customs, tax, consumer-law and warranty questions. The lowest converted sticker price is not automatically the lowest safe final cost.
Keep the previous phone active until calls, messages, mobile data, banking apps and two-factor authentication work on the Duo. Wi-Fi is required during common eSIM activation flows.
Trade-in and financing checks
Apple's quoted trade-in range for an iPhone 13 or newer toward the Duo or iPhone 18 Pro is $175 to $885 in the US. The estimate can change after inspection if the model, screen, battery or overall condition does not match the answers submitted online.
Back up the trade-in device and wait for Apple's instructions before turning off Find My or shipping it. Keep photographs and tracking evidence. Carrier promotions may advertise a larger credit, but early cancellation can remove future bill credits.
Apple Upgrade uses a lease structure with 12- or 24-month terms for iPhone. Read the return and early-upgrade obligations; a low payment does not mean the customer owns the device at the end without further action.
What the $1,999 price buys
The outer screen handles ordinary phone use, while the inner display supports wider apps and side-by-side layouts. Apple lists an A20 Pro chip, two 48MP rear cameras, a 12MP under-display FaceTime camera and Apple Pencil support.
Battery claims differ by screen: Apple lists up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display and up to 31 hours on the inner display. Heavy multitasking, gaming, brightness and cellular use can produce shorter results.
The Duo uses Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID. Buyers should treat that as a daily interaction change, not a small specification. Its two-camera system also lacks the complete Pro Fusion setup of the iPhone 18 Pro, so the more expensive foldable is not automatically Apple's best camera phone.
Reasons to wait for reviews
A foldable screen and hinge add failure points that a conventional iPhone does not have. Independent testing must examine crease visibility, hinge wear, dust behaviour, screen marks, heat, battery life and repair pricing. Third-party apps may also need updates to use the inner display properly.
Developers, high-end enthusiasts and professionals with a clear two-screen workflow have the strongest reason to preorder. Everyone else can wait for durability testing without losing a core iOS feature: the iPhone 18 Pro uses the same chip generation and costs substantially less.
