Apple has entered the foldable-phone market with the iPhone Duo, a book-style device that starts at $1,999 in the United States and opens from a 5.4-inch phone into a 7.6-inch display.
Preorders begin October 16, 2026, with sales starting October 23. The Duo uses Apple's A20 Pro chip, supports multitasking across the larger screen and replaces Face ID with Touch ID in the side button.
The product is launching at unusually different local prices. India's confirmed starting price is ₹2,99,900, while Australia begins at A$3,499 and the UK at £1,999.

The highest-capacity 2TB model reaches $3,199 in the US, ₹4,49,900 in India and approximately R$30,999 in Brazil. Storage options are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
US advertised prices generally exclude state sales tax. Several other markets display tax-inclusive consumer prices. Importing a phone also creates warranty, network, eSIM, customs and consumer-law questions, so the cheapest converted number is not automatically the lowest safe purchase cost.
How the iPhone Duo design works
The Duo has a 5.4-inch external display for normal phone use and a 7.6-inch folding internal display. Apple says the two screens use consistent proportions so content can move between the outer and inner panels without a jarring change in layout.
When opened, apps can use the wider canvas individually or run beside one another. Apple demonstrated productivity uses including larger Zoom layouts, broader Slack views and multiple app windows. The device also supports Apple Pencil, bringing a capability previously associated with the iPad to an iPhone.
The body uses titanium around a custom hinge. Apple is promising a flatter, less distracting crease, but long-term durability cannot be judged from a launch demonstration. Independent testing will need to examine hinge wear, screen marks, dust exposure and repair costs.
Display, cameras and Touch ID
Both displays support ProMotion and an always-on mode, with reported peak brightness up to 3,000 nits. The Duo is available in Star White and Night Sky.
There are two 48MP rear cameras rather than the three-camera arrangement expected on a Pro Max. Buyers paying primarily for telephoto photography should compare the camera systems carefully: the Duo's price reflects the folding display and engineering, not a promise that it is Apple's strongest camera phone.
Apple has removed Face ID and placed Touch ID in the side button. That choice saves internal space and can work naturally whether the device is open or closed, but it is a meaningful change for users accustomed to face authentication. The Duo is also eSIM-only in reported launch configurations.
A20 Pro, C2 modem and battery life
The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro generation as the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, plus Apple's C2 modem. The chip must drive two displays and new multitasking layouts, making software optimisation as important as benchmark performance.
Apple quotes up to 24 hours of mixed dual-screen use and charging to 50% in around 20 minutes. Those figures will depend heavily on how often the large inner display is used. Video, navigation, multitasking and high brightness can produce very different results from folded phone use.
iOS 27 features made for folding
The Duo runs a version of iOS 27 adapted for two screens. Apps can resize as the phone opens, operate side by side and use tabletop positions. The outer display can also help a photo subject preview the camera framing while another person takes the picture.
App support will be one of the most important launch tests. Apple's own software can be prepared in advance, but third-party apps may need updates to use the inner screen properly. Until those updates arrive, some apps may simply stretch rather than provide meaningful tablet-style layouts.
How it compares with other foldables
Apple is arriving years after Samsung, Huawei and Google established book-style folding phones. The Duo's advantages are likely to be iPhone ecosystem integration, developer support and Apple's control of both hardware and iOS.
Its disadvantages are clear at launch: an exceptionally high price, first-generation hardware risk, fewer rear camera options than some premium rivals and uncertain repair economics. Buyers who need a foldable today have mature Android alternatives; buyers who specifically want iOS now have an option but will pay heavily for it.
Should you preorder the iPhone Duo?
Most buyers should wait for independent durability, battery and app-compatibility reviews. A foldable screen and hinge create failure points that do not exist in a conventional iPhone, and the 256GB model already costs more than many laptops and tablets combined.
The strongest early audience is likely to be developers, high-end Apple enthusiasts and professionals who can use the large display for real work. For everyone else, the iPhone 18 Pro offers the same chip generation, a more familiar camera system and a substantially lower starting price.
