World Mental Health Day falls on 10 October 2026. The World Health Organization's campaign theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.” Its focus is on including people with lived experience of mental health conditions in the policies, services and decisions that affect them.

What the theme means

WHO uses “lived experience” to describe knowledge gained from personally experiencing a health condition or seeking support. The campaign argues that this knowledge should influence planning and evaluation, rather than being treated as a story collected after decisions have already been made.

The 2026 campaign also connects the theme to rights-based, community-centred care. That is a policy discussion, not a substitute for individual medical advice. Anyone seeking personal support should use a qualified local health professional, emergency service or trusted crisis resource in their country.

A responsible way to participate

Schools, workplaces and community groups can share WHO campaign material, invite informed speakers and make their own support information easier to find. The useful test is whether an activity gives participants agency and clear next steps, instead of only repeating awareness slogans.

Avoid asking people to disclose private health experiences in public. Participation should be voluntary, informed and safe. If an organisation collects stories, it should explain how they will be used and whether names, recordings or photographs will be shared.

Keep information accurate

The campaign page is useful for public information, but it should not be used to diagnose a condition or decide treatment. If a post names a helpline, check it against the provider's current official page before sharing it. Local emergency numbers and services vary, so publishing a generic number without verification can create real harm.

Find official materials

WHO has published the date, theme, key messages and campaign resources on its World Mental Health Day page. The page will remain the best source for webinars, new publications and any updated material before October 10.
