Everything becomes a tournament
VALORANT Esports is changing the VCT structure in 2027, moving away from long-form league play toward Cups, open qualifiers and performance-based progression. Partner teams remain part of the ecosystem, but direct partnership will not guarantee entry into every event.
Riot describes the idea simply: everything is a tournament. The official VCT 2027 format update says teams that perform poorly can drop into Open Playoffs or return to the beginning of a later qualifier, while strong open teams can climb into major stages.
The change is designed to make more matches consequential and provide visible routes for rosters outside the partner system. It also increases volatility: reputation gets a team only so far once competition begins.
How Kickoff starts
In the Americas, Pacific and EMEA, Kickoff will include 12 teams: eight partner teams and four teams from open qualifiers. The top three from each territory's Kickoff qualify for Masters.
Partner teams receive an initial advantage through direct Kickoff entry, but that protection does not automatically carry across the full season. Later Cup places depend on results. Teams finishing outside the required positions can be sent to Open Playoffs, where they must win back into the next stage.
VCT China follows a modified model. Riot says its 12-team Kickoff will include eight partner teams, two visitor teams and two open-qualifier teams. Visitor teams retain a role through promotion and relegation.
Pacific also receives an extra regional route: a last chance qualifier for leading teams from South Asia and Oceania to fight for places in Kickoff and Cups.
Why roster continuity matters
Open and creator-led teams can carry points and progress only if they keep at least three players from a five-player roster. This rule prevents a qualification position from being detached entirely from the group that earned it.
It also creates a practical balance. Teams can make up to two changes without losing all progress, allowing them to address roles or availability. Replacing the majority of the lineup, however, creates a new competitive identity and requires a new route.
Players and organisations will therefore treat transfer decisions as more than talent swaps. A third change can affect points, seeding and event access.
Payments for non-partner teams
Riot has announced fixed qualification support for open teams that reach major stages. The published amounts are $100,000 for qualifying to Kickoff or a Cup, $200,000 for Masters and $400,000 for Champions.
These payments are separate from prize-pool earnings and other incentives. Riot also lists an additional $100,000 for a non-partner team that reaches the Game Changers Championship.
Predictable support matters because an open team can face travel, visas, coaching and player salary costs before prize money arrives. A qualification payment does not guarantee long-term stability, but it reduces the gap between winning a place and being able to use it.
What partner teams gain—and lose
Partner teams keep valuable starting access and ecosystem support. They are not being treated identically to a brand-new qualifier on day one. What changes is the duration of the advantage.
Under the 2027 model, a partner team cannot assume that a weak stage will be followed by another automatic top-level place. It may have to compete through an open route. That creates more risk for established brands and more meaningful upset potential for challengers.
Fans should expect some complexity during the transition. Different territories have variations, and movement between Cups, Open Playoffs, Masters and Champions depends on placement. The key question when reading a bracket is not merely whether a team is partnered; it is what result the team earned in the previous event.
The wider competitive effect
An open circuit works only if qualifiers are frequent, rules are clear and successful teams can afford to continue. Riot's updated community competition guidelines and fixed payouts address parts of that system, while the 2027 season will test whether the paths feel understandable to viewers.
If the model works, new rosters can rise faster and every stage can affect the next one. Partner teams still matter, but performance becomes the central currency.
