Italy held the defending champions to their lowest points total in 42 years and led 50-48 with fewer than five minutes remaining. The US recovered late to protect its title campaign.

Italy slowed the game, contested possessions and prevented the US from building its usual transition rhythm. The close score was not simply a poor shooting night for the favourites; it reflected the greater depth and tactical discipline of the wider field.
US coach Kara Lawson called this the most challenging edition of the World Cup because bench players across the tournament have been capable of changing games.
That assessment was supported by another surprise result: Mali beat heavily favoured Spain 82-73 on Saturday.
The players who made the difference
Jackie Young led the United States with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Angel Reese contributed eight points, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal while providing energy and pace.
Breanna Stewart said the experienced US group relied on its familiarity with high-pressure situations to close the game in a hostile atmosphere.
Why the 55-point total matters
Team USA have dominated the competition historically, winning 11 world titles. Holding them to 55 demonstrates that opponents can force uncomfortable half-court games and create late pressure.
One close result does not remove the US from favourite status, but it gives future opponents a useful tactical reference: limit transition chances, protect the ball and stay within one possession deep into the fourth quarter.
