European football stadium prepared for UEFA Nations League matchday one

International football returns with a concentrated opening to the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League. Matchday 1 runs from Thursday, September 24 to Saturday, September 26, beginning a league phase that continues until November 17.

For supporters, the opening round offers more than a list of fixtures. It provides an early test of new tactical cycles after the World Cup and immediately places major European nations in competitive matches rather than friendlies.

Matchday 1 dates and headline fixtures

UEFA lists all kick-off times in Central European Time. The biggest matches are spread across three nights:

  • Thursday, September 24: Netherlands vs Germany; Serbia vs Greece; Norway vs Denmark; Portugal vs Wales
  • Friday, September 25: Italy vs Belgium; Türkiye vs France; Hungary vs Ukraine; Sweden vs Romania
  • Saturday, September 26: England vs Spain; Czechia vs Croatia; Slovenia vs Scotland; North Macedonia vs Switzerland

Earlier kick-offs are scheduled in the lower leagues, including Andorra vs Malta at 18:00 CET on Thursday and Georgia vs Northern Ireland at 18:00 CET on Friday. Supporters should confirm local broadcast times because listings can change.

Why England versus Spain stands out

England and Spain meet at Wembley on September 26 in a rematch of the UEFA Euro 2024 final. The Nations League context is different, but the tactical contrast remains compelling: England's direct attacking threat against a Spain side comfortable controlling possession and creating overloads between the lines.

It is also a difficult opening assignment in League A. Dropped points can quickly matter because each team plays only six league-phase matches. There is less time to recover than in a long domestic campaign.

Netherlands versus Germany opens the tournament

The Netherlands-Germany rivalry gives the first night a major global audience. Both teams share Group A2 with Serbia and Greece, so a result in the opener could shape the group before the schedule becomes congested.

The following round begins just three days later. Germany host Greece on September 27, while the Netherlands travel to Serbia. Squad depth and recovery planning will therefore be as important as the first-choice starting eleven.

How the 2026-27 schedule works

Matchdays 1 to 4 run from September 24 through October 6. Matchdays 5 and 6 follow from November 12 to 17. League A quarter-finals and the main promotion-relegation play-offs are scheduled for March 25-30, 2027, with the Nations League finals set for June 9-13, 2027.

The competition is divided into leagues, creating matches between broadly similar-ranked national teams. Results decide group positions as well as promotion and relegation pathways.
