The 2026/27 Premier League season has an unusual first international break: the traditional September and October windows have been combined into one 16-day period from September 21 to October 6.
Premier League Matchweek 5 ends on September 20. The competition then pauses before Matchweek 6 begins on October 10.
Premier League international break dates
- September 21 to October 6, 2026: four international matches; between Matchweeks 5 and 6
- November 9 to 17, 2026: two matches; between Matchweeks 10 and 11
- March 22 to 30, 2027: two matches; between Matchweeks 30 and 31
The first window is longer because national teams can play four fixtures instead of the usual two.
Why were September and October merged?
The change reduces the number of separate interruptions early in the club season. Instead of players repeatedly leaving their clubs, travelling across continents and returning after two matches, many national teams can complete four games in one block.
Player welfare and travel were part of the calendar discussion. The tradeoff is that clubs lose players for a longer uninterrupted period and may receive them back with heavier workloads.
Which international matches will be played?
European teams are scheduled to play UEFA Nations League fixtures during the long window. African nations have Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, while CONCACAF teams play a mixture of Nations League matches and friendlies.
Asian and South American teams are largely using the period for friendlies, subject to each federation's calendar.
What it means for Fantasy Premier League
Managers should avoid rushing transfers before national-team games finish. Injuries, late returns and long-haul travel can affect availability even when a player completes every international match.
Price changes still occur during the break, but preserving flexibility may be more valuable than chasing an early move.
When does the Premier League return?
The league resumes with Matchweek 6 on October 10. Broadcast selections and European fixtures can still move individual matches, so always confirm the club or league listing.
