Laboratory researchers tracing antimicrobial resistance across people animals and water

Antimicrobial resistance develops when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites no longer respond to medicines. The problem crosses hospitals, farms, food systems and the environment, which is why the World Health Organization treats it as a One Health challenge.

Resistance moves between systems

Antibiotic use in people and animals creates selection pressure. Resistant organisms or drug residues can then move through direct contact, food, wastewater and soil. Controlling only one route leaves others open.

What integrated surveillance does

A One Health system compares antimicrobial use and resistance data from healthcare, veterinary, agriculture and environmental sources. Shared laboratory methods and data definitions help officials see whether a pattern is local or moving between sectors.

Prevention is broader than prescribing

Responsible antibiotic use matters, but so do vaccination, clean water, infection control, farm biosecurity and reliable diagnostics. A patient should not be denied a needed medicine in the name of stewardship; the goal is the right drug, dose and duration.

Why global coordination matters

Resistant organisms do not respect borders. Unequal access is also part of the crisis: some communities face overuse while others cannot obtain effective medicines or tests.
