
Apple's M5 Ultra Mac Studio can be configured with up to 512GB of unified memory. For local AI work, that number matters because model weights, context and working data must fit somewhere accessible to the processor.
What unified memory changes
In a unified design, CPU and GPU work from the same memory pool rather than repeatedly copying large datasets between separate system and graphics memory. That can reduce duplication and simplify workloads built for the architecture.
It does not make memory infinite or automatically make every model fast. Software support, quantisation, bandwidth and compute throughput remain critical.
Capacity versus speed
A system may be able to load a model that it cannot run quickly enough for a useful workflow. The M5 Ultra pairs its capacity with up to 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth and an 80-core GPU, but buyers still need application-specific tests.
Privacy and cost trade-offs
Local inference can keep sensitive prompts and documents on premises and avoids per-token cloud charges. The trade-off is a large upfront purchase, power use, maintenance and slower access to specialised cloud accelerators.
The maximum 512GB configuration is due later than the standard September 22 availability, according to Apple. Buyers should confirm delivery rather than planning around the headline date.
