Railway waitlist codes identify the quota under which a passenger is waiting. They do not guarantee a particular confirmation probability, and they are not coach or seat categories.
GNWL: General Wait List
GNWL usually applies when a journey begins at the train's originating station or a major nearby station. Because the general quota is often larger, it may see more cancellations—but confirmation still depends on the specific train, date and demand.
RLWL: Remote Location Wait List
RLWL applies to designated intermediate stations with a separate quota. Movement depends largely on cancellations within that remote-location allocation, so it should not be compared directly with a GNWL number.
PQWL: Pooled Quota Wait List
PQWL serves a group of smaller stations or journey combinations sharing a pooled quota. The pool can be limited, which is why a lower-looking number may still move differently from GNWL.
Other codes include RQWL, or Roadside Quota Wait List. Always recheck the live PNR status and the rules for the ticket type before boarding; do not rely on third-party “confirmation probability” as a promise.
