Google is changing how links appear inside its AI Search experiences, with more prominent inline citations and a test that highlights official websites. The October 15 announcement is relevant to anyone using an AI answer to make a decision: it should become easier to move from the summary to the page behind a claim.

In its Search update, Google describes increased inline links, including links placed higher in responses. It also says it will test a dedicated area for official destinations where a task has only a small number of authoritative places to complete it.

The practical benefit is proximity. If an answer discusses a booking condition, product specification or application requirement, a link beside that statement gives the reader a shorter path to the original detail. A source list at the end can be harder to interpret when several pages support different parts of an answer.

Still, the presence of a link does not establish that the linked page supports every word around it. Open the source and find the relevant passage. Check its date and whether it describes the same country, product version or eligibility group as the answer you received.

That is especially useful for changing information. A previous year’s event page can be authoritative about that year while being the wrong reference for the current schedule. An official company page can accurately describe one subscription tier without describing every other tier.

An official-site section is being tested

Google presents the dedicated official-link display as a test. Readers should not assume the same layout will appear for every query, account or location. A feature announcement and universal availability are different milestones.

For a task such as completing an application, the important check remains the destination itself. Confirm the organization and domain, read the page’s own requirements, and distinguish the institution’s instructions from a third party’s explanation of them. A more visible link can reduce searching; the destination still needs to be the right one.

AI answers still need a verification step

Google’s AI Mode help page advises checking sources and other search results. This is a sensible workflow for an answer that affects money, travel or an important deadline: read the summary, open the supporting page, and verify the exact condition before acting.
