OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, turning advertising into a fast-growing part of the company's business.

The milestone arrived alongside a wider rollout of OpenAI's self-service Ads Manager. Businesses across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa can now buy ChatGPT ads directly, expanding a system that began as a United States pilot earlier in 2026.

The number is significant, but it needs careful interpretation. A $1 billion annualized run rate does not mean the advertising business has already collected $1 billion. It means its recent pace of revenue, if sustained for 12 months, would equal roughly $1 billion.

ChatGPT Ads: the key numbers

  • Annualized revenue run rate: $1 billion
  • Time since launch: Less than 200 days
  • Advertiser base: Tens of thousands
  • Availability: More than 40 countries through OpenAI's sales team and partners
  • Self-service expansion: India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa
  • ChatGPT audience: More than 1 billion weekly active users, according to OpenAI
  • Eligible user plans: Free and Go
  • Ad-free plans: Plus, Pro and Enterprise

OpenAI describes advertising as one pillar of a broader model that also includes consumer subscriptions, enterprise products and usage-based API revenue.

What does a $1 billion annualized run rate mean?

Run rate is a projection based on current performance. It converts a recent revenue pace into a 12-month figure.

For example, a business generating about $83.3 million in a month would be operating at an annualized pace close to $1 billion. That does not guarantee it will generate the same amount every month, and it is not the same as audited annual revenue.

Advertising can be seasonal. Spending often rises around major shopping periods and changes with the wider economy. ChatGPT Ads is also expanding rapidly, so its current pace may increase—or slow—as OpenAI adds countries, advertisers and formats.

The most accurate reading is that OpenAI has built a substantial advertising business unusually quickly. The announcement does not provide a full profit figure, monthly revenue history or geographic breakdown.

Where do ads appear in ChatGPT?

OpenAI says ads are shown on the Free and lower-priced Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad-free.

Ads are labeled and displayed separately from ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI says advertising does not influence the answer a user receives and that advertisers do not get access to private conversations.

The ad system can use the context of the current conversation to select something relevant to what a person is exploring. Depending on the country and the user's settings, broader ChatGPT activity may also contribute to personalization.

That creates a different commercial environment from a traditional search engine. A search query is often a few words; a ChatGPT conversation can reveal a goal, constraints and the stage of a decision. A user may explain a travel budget, compare software for a small business or ask how to furnish a room before seeing a related sponsored placement.

Which users see ChatGPT ads?

The central distinction is the user's plan.

Free and Go users may see ads where the product is available. Paid Plus, Pro and Enterprise users do not see them under OpenAI's current policy.

Availability also varies by country, account status, age and product settings. Seeing ads on one account does not mean every ChatGPT user in that market will have the same experience at the same time.

OpenAI originally described its U.S. test as applying to logged-in adults. Users should check the current help documentation and their account controls because eligibility and regional rules can change as the rollout grows.

Does advertising change ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no. Its published principles state that ads are separate from answers and do not influence the response.

This separation is essential to user trust. A conversational assistant may be used for education, health questions, work, purchases and personal decisions. If users cannot distinguish an answer from a paid recommendation, the product becomes less useful.

The practical test will be consistency. Labels must remain visible, sponsored placements must be distinguishable and ads should not appear in sensitive contexts where commercial targeting would be inappropriate.

OpenAI's advertising policies say placements are restricted around personal, high-stakes or emotionally vulnerable conversations. The effectiveness of those safeguards will depend on how reliably the system identifies context at scale.

Can advertisers read private ChatGPT conversations?

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive access to people's private conversations.

That does not mean ads are selected without context. OpenAI says its system can use the current conversation to determine relevance and may use broader experience data when the user and local rules allow it.

The difference is between the platform using signals to select an ad and the advertiser receiving the underlying chat. OpenAI says the advertiser does not receive the private conversation itself.

Users should still review personalization controls and privacy settings. Advertising products evolve, and the most useful protections are clear explanations, meaningful choices and limits that can be independently evaluated.

Why advertisers are interested in ChatGPT

ChatGPT sits close to the point where people are comparing options and making decisions.

Someone planning a holiday may discuss destination, dates and budget. A business owner may compare accounting tools for a five-person team. A shopper may explain the room size, preferred style and maximum price before choosing furniture.

That context can help advertisers reach people with a specific need without relying only on keywords. It also creates a challenge: relevance must not become intrusive.

OpenAI says tens of thousands of advertisers now use the platform. Small and medium-sized businesses represent a material share after the May introduction of Ads Manager, which reduced dependence on direct sales teams and agencies.

How OpenAI Ads Manager works

Ads Manager lets businesses create and manage campaigns directly.

OpenAI's current advertiser documentation lists CPM, CPC and optimized cost-per-click objectives. Advertisers can set budgets, dates and target countries. Measurement tools include the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API, while available capabilities include product feeds, geographic targeting and custom audiences.

CPM campaigns generally charge around impressions, while CPC campaigns focus on clicks. Outcome optimization attempts to deliver ads toward a chosen conversion event.

These tools make ChatGPT Ads look increasingly like a full advertising platform rather than a limited sponsorship experiment. However, advertisers should evaluate incremental sales, conversion quality and customer acquisition costs instead of treating a new channel's early attention as proof of long-term performance.

Where ChatGPT Ads is expanding

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads is available in more than 40 countries through its Ads Solutions team, agencies and technology partners.

The latest step brings direct self-service buying to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Advertisers outside the United States are a growing share of revenue, although OpenAI did not disclose a regional breakdown.

The expansion matters because privacy law, language, consumer behavior and advertising standards differ across markets. A campaign that works in the U.S. may need different creative, targeting and measurement in Germany, France, the United Arab Emirates or India.

It also gives international small businesses access without requiring a direct relationship with OpenAI's sales team.

Why OpenAI is building an advertising business

Generative AI is expensive to operate. Every conversation requires computing resources, and the industry is investing heavily in chips, data centers, model training and product development.

Subscriptions and enterprise contracts cover part of that cost. Advertising gives OpenAI another way to fund free or lower-priced access while monetizing a very large audience.

The strategy resembles the economic logic behind search and social platforms: offer a widely used consumer product, then sell businesses access to relevant moments of attention. The conversational format, however, introduces different privacy and trust expectations.

OpenAI has also confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering, Reuters reported. A growing advertising unit could diversify revenue before a potential listing, although the timing and completion of any IPO are not guaranteed.

Is ChatGPT now a threat to Google and Meta?

ChatGPT Ads enters a market dominated by Alphabet's Google and Facebook parent Meta, which each generate hundreds of billions of dollars in advertising revenue.

A $1 billion run rate is small compared with those businesses. It is still strategically important because ChatGPT competes for the same high-value activity: helping people discover, evaluate and choose products or services.

Google has deep search intent, enormous advertiser demand and mature measurement systems. Meta has unmatched social targeting and visual reach. OpenAI's advantage is the detail people voluntarily provide during a conversation.

The outcome is unlikely to be a simple replacement of one platform by another. Advertisers may add ChatGPT to a mix that already includes search, social, retail media and video, then move budgets according to measurable returns.

What the milestone means for users

For many users, the immediate effect is simple: ads can help keep Free and Go access available, but they also introduce commercial content into a product used for trusted assistance.

Three things deserve attention:

  1. Whether sponsored content is always clearly identified
  2. Whether account controls make personalization easy to understand and change
  3. Whether ads stay away from sensitive or high-stakes conversations

Paid users should also watch whether OpenAI maintains its current ad-free promise for Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans.

What businesses should consider before buying ChatGPT ads

Businesses should approach ChatGPT Ads as a testable channel, not a guaranteed growth shortcut.

Start with a clear goal, a controlled budget and reliable conversion tracking. Compare results with existing search and social campaigns. Measure not only clicks but also qualified leads, completed purchases, repeat customers and profit after advertising costs.

Creative should match conversational intent. A helpful, specific offer is more likely to fit the environment than a generic banner message.

Businesses operating internationally also need to account for local consent rules, product restrictions, language and customer expectations.

What happens next

OpenAI says the next phase will include more markets, formats, campaign objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities. It also plans to explore more native ways for businesses to interact with consumers inside ChatGPT.

That last point may become the most consequential. Static sponsored placements are familiar. Interactive commercial experiences—where a user can compare, configure or buy through a conversation—could change how digital advertising works.

The $1 billion run rate shows that advertiser demand is already real. The longer-term test is whether OpenAI can grow that revenue without weakening the trust that made ChatGPT valuable in the first place.
