The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League is in its third season under the 36-team league-phase system. It is one table, not separate four-team groups: every club plays eight different opponents, with four home matches and four away matches.
The dates that matter
UEFA lists league-phase matchdays in September, October, November and December 2026, followed by two January 2027 rounds. The knockout play-offs are scheduled for February, the round of 16 for March, quarter-finals for April and semi-finals for late April and early May. The final is scheduled for 5 June 2027 at Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, subject to UEFA's normal event updates.
A fixture page is always more reliable than a viral graphic because kick-off times and individual matches can change. UEFA publishes official club fixtures and results on its competition pages.
How teams qualify from the league phase
The top eight teams in the 36-club table advance directly to the round of 16. Teams placed ninth to 24th enter two-legged knockout play-offs for the remaining eight round-of-16 spots. Teams from 25th to 36th are eliminated from Europe; they do not drop into another UEFA competition.
The standings can look unfamiliar because clubs have not played identical opponents. UEFA's rules use goal difference, goals scored, wins and other criteria to separate sides on equal points. The final ranking uses additional opponents' results and disciplinary criteria if required.
Why this is useful for fans
The format keeps more clubs in contention late in the league phase, but it also makes the line between eighth, ninth and 24th important. Eighth avoids a February play-off; 24th survives; 25th ends the European campaign. That is why a single goal can move a team several places in the table.
Use the official UEFA table for the live position, then check remaining fixtures before drawing conclusions. A points total alone does not explain whether a club has a difficult final schedule or a strong goal difference.
