Frances Tiafoe competes in a five-set match at Wimbledon

A best-of-five tennis match is won by the first player to win three sets. The match can therefore finish in three, four or five sets. Men's singles at the four Grand Slam tournaments uses this format, while most other top-level singles matches are best of three and require two sets to win.

The current debate about player workload has returned attention to the rule. Carlos Alcaraz has argued that five-set matches are essential to Grand Slam history and that administrators should reform the wider calendar instead of shortening the majors.

How a best-of-five match works

Each set is normally won by the first player to reach six games with a margin of two. At 6-6, the competition's tiebreak rule applies. The player who wins three sets wins the match immediately, so no fifth set is played after a straight-sets 3-0 result.

Common score patterns include:

  • 3-0: the winner takes the first three sets.
  • 3-1: the loser wins one set before the other player reaches three.
  • 3-2: all five sets are required.

A set score and a match score describe different things. “6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2” means the winner took three of four sets. The numbers inside each set show games, while a number in parentheses usually reports points in a tiebreak.

What happens in the deciding set?

The four Grand Slams now use a 10-point match tiebreak at 6-6 in the final set, with the first player to ten points winning if they lead by at least two. This harmonised a part of the rules that previously differed by tournament.

Rules can still change, and junior, doubles, wheelchair or qualifying competitions may use variations. The event's official regulations and chair umpire remain authoritative.

Why five sets are strategically different

The extra possible sets create room for recovery. A player can lose the first two sets and still win 3-2. That encourages tactical adjustment: changing return position, shortening rallies, attacking a weaker second serve or managing effort across games.

Physical management becomes part of strategy. Players balance aggression with the possibility of several hours on court. Heat, humidity, medical issues and the length of previous matches can all influence the contest.

The format also changes upset probability. A lower-ranked player must sustain a winning level for three sets, giving a favourite more time to respond. That does not prevent surprises, but it raises the value of endurance and adaptation.

Why some people want shorter matches

Critics argue that long matches can strain players, create unpredictable finishing times and make it difficult for audiences to watch a complete contest. Tournament scheduling becomes harder when one match occupies a court for five hours.

Supporters answer that the physical and tactical test is exactly what makes men's Grand Slam tennis distinct. Many famous comebacks would not exist in a best-of-three format.

The policy choice is therefore not simply “tradition versus health.” Administrators can also examine the number of mandatory tournaments, rest between events, late-night starts and the length of the off-season.

Is every Grand Slam match best of five?

No. The format is principally used for men's singles main-draw matches at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open. Women's singles is best of three, as are most doubles and tour-level matches, subject to event rules.

Quick answers

How many sets must a player win? Three.

Can a best-of-five match finish after four sets? Yes. A 3-1 score means one player reached three set wins in the fourth set.

Is the fifth set always endless? No. The Grand Slams use a deciding match tiebreak at 6-6 under their current harmonised rule.

Why do most tour events use best of three? The shorter format makes daily scheduling and player recovery easier across a week-long tournament, while the majors preserve a different men's singles test.
