Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 shown in official launch images

Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, while Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799 in the United States. Both use the S11 chip and support Apple's latest health and Siri AI platform, so the Ultra's extra cost is mainly for battery, size, rugged hardware, water capability, GPS and satellite features.

The practical question is not which watch is “best.” It is whether the Ultra's specialised hardware solves a real problem. For everyday notifications, gym workouts, sleep tracking and health alerts, Series 12 offers most of the experience for half the starting price.

Key differences at a glance

  • Series 12: 42mm or 46mm cases, from $399, up to 2,000 nits, 50-metre water resistance and up to 24 hours of normal battery life.
  • Ultra 4: 49mm titanium case, from $799, up to 3,000 nits, 100-metre water resistance and up to 50 hours of normal battery life.
  • Low Power Mode: up to 38 hours on Series 12 versus up to 84 hours on Ultra 4.
  • GPS: precision L1 on Series 12; precision dual-frequency GPS on Ultra 4.
  • Connectivity: cellular is optional on Series 12, while Ultra 4 includes cellular and satellite capability.

Both require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later. Neither is designed to pair with Android.

Battery is the clearest Ultra advantage

Series 12 is rated for up to 24 hours, enough for a normal day and some sleep tracking when charging is planned. Apple says a 15-minute charge can provide up to 12 hours, which helps people who charge while showering or getting ready.

Ultra 4 reaches up to 50 hours in normal use and 84 hours in Low Power Mode. A 15-minute charge is quoted for up to 18 hours. That difference matters for overnight hikes, long races, travel days and users who dislike daily charging.

Battery claims are controlled estimates. Cellular use, GPS workouts, display brightness, cold weather and satellite features can shorten runtime. A user who ends every day near a charger may gain little from paying $400 more.

Display, size and comfort

Series 12 offers 42mm and 46mm choices across aluminium, titanium and ceramic cases. It is easier to fit on smaller wrists and can be more comfortable during sleep.

Ultra 4 comes in a 49mm titanium case. The larger, brighter screen is easier to read outdoors and while moving, but the watch is heavier and may feel bulky under sleeves or during overnight wear. Buyers should try the case on before ordering if possible.

The Ultra display reaches 3,000 nits, compared with 2,000 on Series 12. That is valuable in direct sun, snow or water. It is not a major benefit for someone who mainly checks the watch indoors.

Running, hiking and water sports

Series 12 covers mainstream running, cycling, swimming and gym tracking. Its 50-metre water rating supports swimming and snorkelling, and its depth gauge reaches 6 metres.

Ultra 4 targets more demanding use. It supports high-speed water sports and recreational scuba, offers a depth gauge to 40 metres, includes a siren and uses dual-frequency GPS for more reliable tracks in difficult environments.

Emergency SOS via satellite and satellite connectivity widen the Ultra's appeal for remote travel. These tools remain subject to regional availability and conditions; they are not a replacement for proper safety equipment or a dedicated emergency beacon on serious expeditions.

Health features are closer than the price suggests

Both models list high-frequency background heart-rate tracking, Recovery HRV, ECG, hypertension notifications, Blood Oxygen, sleep tracking, sleep-apnoea notifications, wrist-temperature sensing and cycle tracking. Feature availability can vary by country and regulatory approval.

That overlap is why Series 12 is the value choice for health-focused buyers. Ultra 4 does not charge twice as much for twice the health platform. It adds endurance and rugged capability around broadly similar core sensors and software.

GPS or cellular decisions

Series 12 buyers can choose GPS or GPS + Cellular. The GPS model relies on a nearby iPhone or Wi-Fi for calls, messages and many connected functions. GPS + Cellular can operate more independently but requires a supported carrier plan.

Ultra 4 is sold with cellular. Before ordering, check carrier support and the monthly wearable-plan fee. A cellular watch without an activated plan still carries hardware value, but it may not deliver the independence that justified its cost.

Which model should you buy?

Choose Series 12 if you want current health tools, everyday workouts, fast charging, sleep tracking and a choice of sizes. It is also the safer recommendation for smaller wrists and buyers uncertain whether they need cellular.

Choose Ultra 4 if you regularly need multi-day battery, high-brightness outdoor visibility, dual-frequency GPS, scuba support, a siren or satellite features. The Ultra is easier to justify as equipment for a specific activity than as a general status upgrade.
